Mission #30, Day 1--Menswear--Suit

Starting out this Mission Week with a menswear no-brainer: the suit.  Now, obviously not only men can wear suits.  In fact, part of what I struggle with when styling a menswear look is the stigma that a certain item or style of clothing is meant for only one gender.  But, suits are generally considered menswear so here it is.

In fact, who this particular menswear inspired look reminds me of is Mr. Johnny Cash--the man in black.  You can't very well go wrong with black and well fitting pieces.  A good way to keep the femininity in a look like this, though, is to add really girly pieces--like hot pink heels and shiny silver jewelry.

These shoes in this outfit remind me of my daughter, Brielle, who has very recently gained an interest in fashion and is growing into her own style.  She has two older brothers.  I was so stoked to have my little girl and was slightly bummed that she never let me play with her hair and would prefer jeans over pretty dresses.

Which, of course, I loved that she was willing to get down and dirty.  But I can't lie that when she started requesting that I braid her hair and buy her dresses and started saving money for boots, I was a little giddy.

She asked me on this day why I wore hot pink shoes when the rest of my outfit was black and I told her that it was my pop of color for the look.  Currently, she tries to add bits of color into her looks.  And it is adorable when she tells me what her "tap of color" is in her outfits.

Modcloth Challenge

Recently, Modcloth contacted me and asked me to style their Beach Blanket Bingo Two Piece.  I know that pretty much everyone is on board with warmer weather, casual outings and weekends with zero agendas.  Being trapped in maternity clothes for the past eight months, I'm totes ready to peel some layers.

So how would I style this cute little retro suit?  I picture wearing this suit during a casual day at the lake with my family and friends.  So I would want something no fuss.  I would wear these cute overalls over the suit, with the cute printed button down top unbuttoned over it and some fun colored sandals.  Of course, for functionality's sake, a cute tote to carry all the relaxation essentials, a great hat to shade from the sun and some fun sunnies that hone in the vintage vibe.

I have been a long fan of Modcloth and putting this look together was so much fun.  If you like it, you can find the pieces here:

Dear Frannie Friday--Gender Poll

I don't think I'll be disappointed with the decision to wait to find out the gender of the baby.  I did, however, underestimate how difficult waiting for nine months to find out the gender would be.  I am a very impatient person.  I am proud of myself for sticking to the surprise, but I cannot wait to see what has been rolling and bouncing around inside my belly!

I honestly go back and forth about what I think it is all the time.  When I was first pregnant, I was so sure it was a boy--I had a specific craving (cheese and only cheese) and no sickness at all--just like Conner.  But then, I was sure it was a girl--everything was just like when I was pregnant with Brielle (strong sense of smell, really bad morning sickness, strong food aversions).  But then I was second guessing myself again because the activity level of the baby is just like Kaden and I think I'm carrying pretty central to my belly the further along I get.  Though, this is the first pregnancy where I have been much more health conscious by watching what I eat, practicing yoga actively and actually get some rest when I can!

Our families are torn as well.  My whole side of the family is sure that it is a boy--except my sister, who is sure that it is a girl.  Patrick's whole side of the family is sure that it is a girl--except for his sister, who is sure that it is a boy.  Pretty even split.

So far, most of the signs point to a girl.  But old wive's tales are not scientific or definitive in any realm.  I've carried boys and girls, but I haven't been pregnant for seven years!  I don't remember all of the details and have very little photograph evidence of my pregnancies.

So this week, I have a question for YOU!!!  We only have about 6-7 weeks left until we find out for sure, but in the mean time, guessing sure is fun.
What's your guess? A little mister or a little miss?

Thursday Mixer--Red Dress

I bought this simple, red cotton dress for the Red Ball back in 2012.  It is super comfy and has serious mixability potential.  Unfortunately, I haven't utilized it all that I could have.  Mostly because I kinda forget that I have it since it doesn't really stand out in my closet.  I should fix that.

I bought this dress specifically for an event, on the fly and in a hurry.  Retail.  For $24, I believe.  Kinda pricey for my usual taste, but in the scheme of things it's not too shabby.  With four documented wears, that brings the current price per wear to about $6.  I know we can do better than that, especially since I now know I can fit it over the bump.

1, 2, Now, 4

Our former landlord didn't let us put a basketball hoop on the garage.  Once we got our own house, it was one of our first priorities.  So the boys got a basketball hoop for Christmas from Santa this past Christmas.

Well, of course the weather was cold and though it got put up, it didn't get much use.  But as the weather warms, everything is better.  I can open the windows while I cook dinner.  And the kitchen window leads right out into the front of the house.  Right out where the boys are usually playing basketball these days.

Between the age difference and other difficulties, the boys have always had issues getting along.  For some reason, though, they have not had one fight in the six months since we've moved to this house.  And every time I hear them not only getting along, but actually laughing and playing together, it totally warms my heart.

History Buff

When my sister and I were young, we spent a lot of time with my Grandmother.  She loved history and genealogy.  She tried to instill this interest in my sister and I as well.

When we were little, we did everything in the name of history.  Instead of going to water parks and amusement parks, we would go to historical sites like Fort Laramie, the United States Mint and the Molly Brown House.  When we would get the pleasure of renting movies, they were often historical ones.

We loved it.   We found it fascinating and, later as adults, very important.  My grandmother was always one to talk to us about history--namely our Native American history and famous and important people in our family tree.

Recently, my daughter Brielle's class has been learning about American symbols--the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty and the Declaration of Independence.  She has fallen in love with learning all she can about the important icons, people and times in history.

I love it.  And I know that if my grandmother were alive, she would love it as well.  Although, when my daughter asked me if I was alive when Abraham Lincoln was president, it wasn't quite as amusing.

Share the Covers--Sea of Love

Here is the original by Phil Philips . . .

And the awesome/emotional/wonderful cover by Cat Power circa the Juno Soundtrack . . .

Juno is one of my all time favorite movies.  It is hilarious with many great one-liners.  But also, I can relate to it on some level.  When I was pregnant with my oldest son, I was a senior in high school.  I was able to hide it for the most part, but I was pregnant at prom and graduation.

Being pregnant that young is terrifying in a totally naive way.  Finding out I was pregnant halfway through my senior year was not expected.

Obviously, I chose to keep Kaden.  But I can understand all of the confusing emotions depicted in the beginning of the movie.  And I tear up every time the part right after Juno gives birth.  But also at the end of the movie when they show the note from Juno to Vanessa and when Vanessa first holds the baby.  Having babies, no matter the age or circumstance, is a magical time.

And I'm about to cry just thinking about it.  Again.

Mission Monday #30--Menswear

The next Mission Week will be quite a challenge indeed, but I accept the challenge.  Menswear.  It is a difficult style for anyone to master--particularly when you are female.  And pregnant.

My daughter has been cracking me up lately.  She is almost 7 and to the age that teeters between adorable independence and somewhat irritable defiance.  She has said things in the past few weeks that have left me bewildered.

Last week, I was driving my daughter and younger son to school.  As I drove, I applied lip gloss.  "What is that?" I heard my daughter ask from the back seat.

"It's just lip gloss," I told her.  "Would you like some?"
"Ugh," she scoffed.  "No!  I don't want to get pregnancy face!"

Interesting.  I don't know where it came from.  I don't know what it meant.  But it did make me smile thinking about it all day.
